The “Gandhi Memorial Pillar” located at Laheriasarai Tower Chowk in Darbhanga city is not just a statue, but a historical heritage and a symbol of respect to the Father of the Nation. This Gandhi Memorial Pillar was built by Vaishya Ratna Late Asharfi Mahaseth. This pillar was built to preserve the symbol of the Father of the Nation. But at present its condition is very bad. District President of Vaishya Sudi Samaj Mahasangh, Ashok Nayak, raised his voice against this matter and demanded the district administration to make necessary improvements.
Main Issues
Wreath laying on broken statue: For the last 18 years, garlands are being laid on the broken statue on 2 October, 30 January, 15 August and 26 January. This is an insult to the Father of the Nation.
Damage to the statue: The knee of the right leg of the statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi has been completely destroyed. Which is not befitting as a society.
Ignoring the cleanliness of the memorial: The “Gandhi Smarak Stambh” located at Laheriasarai Tower Chowk is completely filled with dirt. Due to which there is a feeling of dissatisfaction among the citizens visiting there.
Disorganized electricity wires: A lot of electricity wires are passing above the “Gandhi Smarak Stambh”. This not only spoils the beauty of this memorial, but is also very dangerous from the security point of view.
Demands made to the administration
Vaish Sudi Samaj Mahasangh District President Ashok Nayak met District Officer Rajiv Roshan and submitted a written application and made the following demands:
- The broken statue should be removed and a new statue should be installed.
- Arrangements should be made for cleaning and regular maintenance of this memorial site.
- A committee should be formed for the proper care of this memorial, the list of which he has already given to the administration.
- Electric wires should be organized so that the memorial site looks safe and beautiful.
Reaction of citizens and organizations
Resentment is also increasing among the local citizens regarding this issue. Local residents say that action should be taken on this issue as soon as possible. Social organizations based in Darbhanga have appealed to the administration to take immediate action on this issue.
