The festival of Mahashivratri was also celebrated with great pomp in Darbhanga and Madhubani districts of Bihar. Long queues of devotees were seen in Shivaji Chatti Chowk, Dokali Mahadev Temple and other major temples of Darbhanga.

At the same time, thousands of devotees gathered in the famous Ugna Mahadev temple of Madhubani district since morning for Jalabhishek. During this time, strict security arrangements were made by the administration.

Mahashivratri’s Spiritual Significance: Fasting & Worship

According to religious texts, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day, so it is considered especially auspicious. According to Shiv Puran, all the sorrows and pains of the devotees who keep fast on Mahashivratri and do night vigil and worship Shivlinga are removed.

This festival is also considered important for self-purification and attainment of salvation. On this day, Shiva devotees anoint Lord Shiva with Belpatra, milk, curd, honey, Gangajal and cannabis etc. and pray to him to remove the troubles of their life.

Unique worship tradition

Every region has its own way of worshiping Mahashivratri. There is a unique tradition of worship in Ugna Mahadev temple of Madhubani district, where devotees do special Shringar and Rudrabhishek on Shivalinga.

According to the belief associated with this temple, Lord Shiva himself appeared at this place on the request of poet Vidyapati and gave darshan to his devotees. Therefore, the worship of Mahashivratri is considered to be of special importance here.

Apart from this, devotees in Mithilaanchal region remain immersed in Shiva devotion throughout the night and bhajan-kirtan is organized. Shivabaraat is also taken out at some places, in which Lord Shiva is decorated as a groom and taken around the city.
